Ambika, Kandulu and Shanthi Delight

The throng of over 15,000 visitors who gathered at the Washington Zoo, to felicitate the Asian Elephant, were delighted by the antics of Sri Lankan born Shanthi, her Indian counterpart Ambika and young Kandula: Shanthi’s calf, born in the USA.

The majestic mammals engaged in revelry, drank over 70 gallons of sugared iced tea and mesmerized visitors. The event was organized by the Friends of the National Zoo, Smithsonian Institute and the Sri Lankan Embassy in Washington D.C. It was indeed a celebration, of the South Asian Elephant and a reminder, that the largest gathering of elephants in the wild is seen in Sri Lanka, at this time of the year.
