Soldiers on duty in the North offered a thousand lotuses to the historic Mavittapuram Kanthsawamy Kovil . This 7th century shrine is in the high security zone in the Jaffna peninsula in close proximity to Palaly Army and Airbase and the Kankesanthurai Naval harbour. The chariot festival was held with the participation of over 5000 devotees who came from various parts of the peninsula to pay homage at the shrine.
